CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICES

Cultural
Plans

We Care NSW is an Aboriginal organisation that has extensive experience in developing cultural plans for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people in Out of Home Care. Cultural plans can also be created for those in the community looking to learn more about their culture.

The basis of our cultural plans are to promote a sense of connection and identity that is consistent with the shared stories shared lives framework.

We acknowledge that cultural plans need to be developed in collaboration between family and community to ensure that connection is made, and the child’s future and cultural goals can be successfully achieved.

This is done through:

number 1
Identifying the cultural needs of an Aboriginal child or young person
number 2
Exploring the cultural identity and history of the individual, and appropriate family history
number 3
Outline essential cultural activities for the child or young person to participate in to maintain their identity and connection
number 4
Develop key relationships with relevant Aboriginal family, kin and community
number 5
Maintaining important cultural information for an Aboriginal child or young person

We value the participation of the child or young person’s family in the development, review and implementation of the plan and acknowledge that family is culture.

The Cultural Plans we develop are provided in a timely manner to ensure that the child and their families’ unique cultural needs are incorporated into their supports as soon as possible. Our follow up services assist with the implementation of the plans and the plans review.
